Northern Great Barrier Reef Sports Fishing

Great Barrier Reef Fishing is one of the fishing adventures you should do at least once in your lifetime. The Great Barrier Reef is the worlds longest coral reef covering over 300 000 Sq Klms from near PNG in the North to near Gladstone in the south. It was designated World Heritage Marine Park in 1981 and it has over 3000 reefs, 600 islands and coral cays and over 1500 species of fish and marine life.

Great Barrier Reef Fishing is best between November and March when the blustery S.E trade winds that dominate the reef have gone and the more gentle northerly winds prevail. We head to the far north Great Barrier Reef from Seisa near Thursday Island at the top of Cape York. This area of the reef is rarely visited as it is too far for the charter fleet from Cairns area to travel. Usually we have the whole area to ourselves. We will visit various islands, coral cays and reefs depending on prevailing weather conditions but often include Mt Adolphus, Johnson and Dugong islands, and reefs such as Kagar, Kai-Damun, Meggi-Damun, Bayang and Wap reef. This is the ultimate in Great Barrier Reef Fishing.

Fishing will include casting, jigging, trolling, popper fishing and fly fishing for the likes of Giant Trevally, Snapper, Red Bass, Mahi Mahi, Dog tooth and big eye Tuna, Marlin, Sail fish, Coral Trout and up to 50 other species. And they do not breed small fish out here!

Great Barrier Reef Fishing is perfect for sports fishing and fly fishing alike.

Accommodation

The ship is called the Tropic Paradise which is a 62 foot catamaran cruiser. She is fully surveyed and licensed to carry guests in absolute comfort and safety, fitted with all modern conveniences. She has air-conditioning, 240 volt power, hot water, refrigeration and ice machine.

The ship boasts large toilet/shower suites, large airy 2 bed cabins with cupboards for adequate personal storage, large comfortable beds with personal reading lights. The dining and lounge area is fully equipped with CD player, TV’s and videos and there is an enormous shaded upper deck for relaxation, entertainment and barbecues.

She will be your home away from home, whilst you fish the rich waters of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia's remote far north.

Guides And Equipment

The Tropic Paradise carries up to three fishing guides all of whom are professional and very experienced in Great Barrier Reef Fishing. They will teach you the intricacies of fishing in these warm and tropical waters and ensure you hook up on as many species as possible. Whether casting the reefs for large Coral Trout, trolling the depths for giant “Doggies” or wading the coral cays for 20kg+ G.T’s their guidance and experience will put you in the best position.

The ship also has a number of purpose built custom sports fishing boats which will take two or three fishers and a guide with plenty of space. These are designed to give maximum stability and they also draw minimal water allowing them to get into the shallow waters surrounding reefs and mangroves. The ship is equipped with professional quality lure fishing tackle and gear. The equipment is provided to clients on a replace if lost or damaged basis. We suggest you bring your own fly fishing gear.
