Kimberley "Barra" Fishing

The Kimberley is one of the last great wilderness areas in Australia. This vast area dominates the north of Western Australia and is roughly the size of the state of Victoria, yet with only 35 000 people. The landscape is dominated by vast savannah grass and woodlands, rocky escarpments and gorges and for the fisherman, miles of fish rich rivers, estuaries and coastlines. Most of the best fishing areas are inaccessible by road and few facilities exist.

The fishing we will be doing here is lower river and estuary fishing for Barramundi, Mulloway, Fingermark, Threadfin and other estuary species. If you have ever wanted to join the “1 meter plus Barra club”, this is the place to do it!

The seasons in the Kimberley are different than southern Australia. January to March is the wet season with heavy rain and often flooding. March and April is the “run off” period and one of the best “Barra” fishing times of the year. May to September is the Dry season with lower humidity and temperatures around 30 degrees most days. October to December is the “ build up” to the wet season and as water and air temperatures are rising the fishing is very good.

Accommodation

The camp is located overlooking a picturesque Kimberley river and offers wonderful riverscape views and spectacular sunsets that the Kimberley is renowned for. It has power, hot showers, flushing toilets, fridges, full size beds (not camp beds) and overhead fans in all bungalows.

Hearty meals are supplied from the fully stocked kitchen by the in house staff. The camp is designed to blend in with the local environment and leave a minimal footprint.

Guides And Boats

The guides are professionals who fish these rivers on a daily basis and have the knowledge and skills to give you the best chance of catching the Barra of your dreams.

The boats are purpose built for this type of work and usually around 6 meters in length. They are equipped with sunshades and quiet four stroke motors and fully equipped with late model Shimano gear. But feel free to bring your favourite Barra outfit if you wish.

Other Activities

This is primarily a fishing camp and one that is mostly focused on catching large Barramundi. It is a pristine natural environment with a myriad of wild life. This includes many resident crocodiles and a multitude of very colorful and some migratory birdlife such as large Eagles, Brolga and Jabiru just to name a few. There are plenty of opportunities for wild life spotting.

Getting There

Access is through Kununurra in the eastern Kimberley which in turn is accessed by regular daily flights from all Southern Capitals via Darwin or Broome.

Other Destinations

The gateways to the Kimberley are Broome and Darwin. Both are surrounded by thousands of miles of wilderness featuring flood plains, waterfalls, gorges, beaches, islands and a rich diversity of topical wildlife and marine life. There is a large selection of touring, accommodation, cultural, sporting, dining and shopping opportunities available. As a licenced tour operator and travel agent located in Darwin we can assist you with these options.
