Monster Bass In Papua New Guinea
One of the last true wilderness areas in the world PNG is a bewildering mix of wildlife, rugged terrain, languages, islands, primitive cultures and amazing fishing action. Of the hundreds of islands in the PNG group New Britain is one of the largest and is found one hours flying time north East of Port Moresby. The lodge is on the shores of Open Bay on the west coast of New Britain.
Although there is a myriad of other fishing opportunities available it is the legendary Black and Spot Tail Bass that bring anglers to the area. These brutes are ambush feeders that inhabit the jungle clad river systems and regularly grow to in excess of 5kg. They feel like 20kg when they hit the fly or lure!
If by chance you tire of chasing the Bass there are plenty of Tuna, Trevally, Barracuda, Mackerel, Queenfish and others around the reef systems nearby. There will be ample opportunity to fish both river and reef systems, mostly boat based on board various vessels up to 34 ft in length.
The season runs from April to November which is mainly the dry season in PNG. During most of this time the weather will be dry and hot with above average humidity.
PNG is an ideal destination for sports fishing and fly fishing alike.
Accommodation
The lodge is a small family run property on the island of New Britain north of the PNG mainland. It is built on the beach front and accommodates up to 12 people at one time in twin bed rooms each with large airy balconies and ceiling fans. All rooms are serviced daily.

The main lounge area has a bar where drinks can be purchased and home-style meals are prepared by the in-house cook and 3 meals a day are included in the package whilst in house. Before each days fishing begins guests can partake in a continental style breakfast and each evening relax and enjoy a two course dinner. Lunch will be provided on the boat during the days fishing.
Guides And Equipment
Most of the guiding is done by PNG nationals from the surrounding villages. They are professional full time guides and they have grown up fishing these waters so they know them very well.
Tackle can be purchased or hired from the lodge but we recommend you bring a selection of your own gear. A suggested list can be sent to you upon booking.
