Tiwi Islands Fishing Northern Territory
The Tiwi Islands are Aboriginal owned islands situated 30 minutes flying time north of Darwin. These quiet islands have been home to the Tiwi people for hundreds of years. They are also known as the “islands of smiles” attesting to the happy nature of the locals. The waters that surround the two Tiwi Islands of Bathurst and Melville are renowned as some of the most productive topical fishing waters in Australia. The Tiwi people invite you to come and enjoy this fishermen’s paradise.
The Tiwi Islands are blessed with a number of fishing environments with something to suite everyone. Miles of unspoilt beaches and sand flats, pristine mangroves and estuary systems and numerous reef systems support a rich myriad of marine life. Flyfishing, lure, bluewater and Barramundi fishing are all sure to do well here. Threadfin Salmon, Blue Salmon, Golden Trevally, Queenfish, Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jacks, Black Jewfish, Grunter, Mackerel are just some of the 50 odd species regularly caught here. Dugongs, Turtles, crocodiles, dolphins and whales are regularly seen in the waters of the Tiwi Islands.
The best time to fish the Tiwi’s is anytime! These private and lightly fished waters will always fish well. March to May is the run off season when the wet season has generally finished and the flood waters are “running off” into the rivers. Barramundi and others gather in the estuaries and go on a feeding frenzy at this time. September to December is also very productive as the warmer water during the “build up” to the wet season stimulates the fish into more feeding.
The Tiwi Islands is a perfect location for sports fishing and fly fishing alike.
