Tiwi Islands Fishing Northern Territory

The Tiwi Islands are Aboriginal owned islands situated 30 minutes flying time north of Darwin. These quiet islands have been home to the Tiwi people for hundreds of years. They are also known as the “islands of smiles” attesting to the happy nature of the locals. The waters that surround the two Tiwi Islands of Bathurst and Melville are renowned as some of the most productive topical fishing waters in Australia. The Tiwi people invite you to come and enjoy this fishermen’s paradise.

The Tiwi Islands are blessed with a number of fishing environments with something to suite everyone. Miles of unspoilt beaches and sand flats, pristine mangroves and estuary systems and numerous reef systems support a rich myriad of marine life. Flyfishing, lure, bluewater and Barramundi fishing are all sure to do well here. Threadfin Salmon, Blue Salmon, Golden Trevally, Queenfish, Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jacks, Black Jewfish, Grunter, Mackerel are just some of the 50 odd species regularly caught here. Dugongs, Turtles, crocodiles, dolphins and whales are regularly seen in the waters of the Tiwi Islands.

The best time to fish the Tiwi’s is anytime! These private and lightly fished waters will always fish well. March to May is the run off season when the wet season has generally finished and the flood waters are “running off” into the rivers. Barramundi and others gather in the estuaries and go on a feeding frenzy at this time. September to December is also very productive as the warmer water during the “build up” to the wet season stimulates the fish into more feeding.

The Tiwi Islands is a perfect location for sports fishing and fly fishing alike.

Accommodation

The lodge is a spacious, cool, and relaxing retreat from the tropical climate. It is set amongst acres of well watered lawns, and surrounded by palms and a tropical garden that creates a magnificent ambience for your enjoyment and relaxation. The living area stretches right through the middle of the building, surrounded on each side by the bedrooms, and open at each end. The area has recently been renovated, and the easterly aspect and beach front location is guaranteed to catch the most casual of cooling breezes.

There is a well stocked bar in the dining area that looks directly east over the Apsley Straight, and the lodge will cater for any special preferences in the way of drinks if you let us know in advance. The rooms are air conditioned and comfortable. All have three single beds, or a double and a single bed. There is a dressing table and draws, towel racks and plenty of hanging space for your clothes.

The popular spa area is covered with a thatched roof, and can be used throughout the day till late. The jetty makes an idyllic setting for an evening drink while the sun goes down.

Guides, Boats And Equipment

The guides are all resident professional fishing guides who spend all their time fishing the surrounding waters. Some have spent many years residing on the islands. They have the experience to ensure you get amongst the fish and the knowledge to assist with tackle and techniques ensuring you get that “catch of a lifetime”

All the gear is provided on board the purpose built boats but guests are welcome to bring along your favourite outfits. Limited fly fishing gear is available and keen fly fishers might like to bring their own customized equipment.
